Effective date (Month / Day / Year)
Decision / award date (Month / Day / Year)
Worth knowing
Effective dates are governed by 38 CFR § 3.400. For original claims filed after separation, the effective date is usually the date the VA receives your claim — unless you filed within one year of separation, in which case it can be your day after discharge. For an increase, it can be the date evidence shows the condition worsened (up to one year prior to filing).
